This past Friday night, after losing two straight games for the first time in two years, Roncalli finally gained retribution, in the turning point matchup of the regular season.

The contest was all Chatard from the start, as the Trojans took a 16-0 lead late in the second half.

Roncalli answered back with a field goal, set up by a 38- yard reception from senior running back Brandon Petree, to end the half, cutting the Trojan lead to 13 in the process

Despite suffering an injury on the final passing play, before halftime, Petree, reminded everyone why he was one of the top juniors in Indiana last year, recording a 53-yard touchdown run early in the 3rd quarter.

After the offensive strike, the Rebel defense made its stand, shutting down the Trojan offense, and recording a turnover in the process.

The help from the defense was all Petree and the rest of the Rebel offense needed.

On the opening drive of the fourth quarter, Petree ran another touchdown to the house, on a 51-yard rush. The extra point by Drew Oehrle completed the scoring drive, and gave Roncalli a one point lead.

The defense continued its second half dominance, forcing a game-saving fumble, with Chatard deep in Roncalli territory.

The next drive for the Rebels was one of sweet satisfaction. Roncalli put together a three point scoring drive that took over two minutes off the clock.

With under a minute to go, Chatard charged down the field, spiking the ball with four seconds left at the Roncalli 30-yard line. The Trojans made one last shot at the end zone, but the pass fell incomplete.

The Roncalli student section stormed the field, and Principal Chuck Weisenbach rang the bell of the Chapel of the Sacred Heart in celebration.

For the first time since 2004, Roncalli had beaten Chatard, and all was right with the world.
~James Cook
Game Notes: Brandon Petree led the Rebel offense with two touchdowns, recording 148 rushing yards on 18 carries in the process. Petree also led the Rebels in receiving, with 43 yards on 3 receptions. The last time Roncalli defeated Chatard was the 2004 season, they went on to win the State Championship that year.

However, this week offers another chance to flip the losing streak and start winning. Friday, they face off against rival, Bishop Chatard, a two-time defending Regional Champion.

The Trojans travel to Roncalli with two dominating performances already under their belt.

The first win was over Broad Ripple, where their offense exploded for 42 points and won the game in blowout fashion. Then, the next week they turned around and blanked Whiteland, 30-0.

Some names you will hear on Friday night for the Trojans are quarterback Drew McDonald and running back Nolan Miller.

Through the first two games, McDonald has thrown for three touchdowns and dominated both Broad Ripple and Whiteland. As for Miller, he has tallied up 184 yards with 4 touchdowns.

The Rebels are going up against a very tough offense and a defense that has only allowed six points in two games.

If they plan to come away with a win Friday night, the Rebels will have to put together their best performance of the season.

“Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place.”

The words of Mr. Bob Tully captured the hearts of all Rebels in attendance at Roncalli’s first all-school liturgy of the 2010 year.

Each month, Rebels join together in the Family Room, AKA the gym, in celebration of the Eucharist. The first mass of the new school year was in dedication to St. Monica, the mother of Augustine. Like our teachers, St. Monica was patient with her son and did everything she could to open his eyes to God.

Expectations are high this year for the Rebels, and for good reason. Most people would expect the first mass of the year to be unenthusiastic. The Rebels, however, began their first mass with high spirits and voices that carried over into the halls of St. Jude.
As the teachers and visitors look around during mass, they saw old faces and new faces. They saw the students of today, and the leaders of tomorrow. The senior class of 2011 took their places for the first time on the gym floor, and the junior and sophomore classes made room for the new addition to the Rebel family, the freshman class of 2014.
When mass began, the school rang with the voices of our family as we joined to praise God. Each student set an example that expressed the way mass should be celebrated at Roncalli. The seniors led as the head of the body of students, making sure others followed the example that they were setting.

Even the freshmen, who are new to traditions here, did their best and helped to lift our spirits through the roof. At the end of mass this family joined to sing “Lean on Me” to show unity, friendship, and love for our classmates. Even after this memorable event, Father Wilmoth’s words still echo through the halls, “no matter what comes to our lives, recognize His presence with us and love for us.”

There was no cheering, no dancing, no party at Chick Fil A as the Rebels were stunned by a game winning field goal as time expired giving them a 10-7 loss to Franklin Central this past Friday night.

In a matchup based on defensive, rather than offensive attack, the first score of the game did not occur until early in the second quarter. The Flashes struck first on a 5-yard run by junior running back Aaron Bruning. Later in the quarter, Roncalli put a scoring drive of their own together, capping it off with a 28-yard run by senior running back Alex Stock.

The Rebels looked to take a three point lead early in the third quarter, but the field goal by junior Drew Oehrle hooked left, leaving the score tied at seven apiece.

Despite 385 yards of total offense by both teams, the field goal attempt by Roncalli would be the last scoring chance by either team until the final minute of the fourth quarter. Starting on their own 45- yard line, Franklin Central drove down the field, as junior Tyler Asher recorded his first two catches of the contestto put the Flashes deep in Roncalli territory.

After a 1-yard rush by Bruning, the Flashes let the clock run down to 5.5 seconds before calling a timeout. Franklin Central lined up for the 32-yardfield goal. A great hold by junior Connor Henkle set up an even better field goal for fellow classmate and kicker Phillip Reynolds, as he booted the game winner as time expired.

Despitesanother heart breaking loss for Roncalli, Head Coach Bruce Scifres said he “saw a more consistent team on the field,” and that even though improvements still need to be made, they are getting much better on a team standpoint.

~James Cook

Random Notes: Despite losing the game, Roncalli did walk away winners of the Chick FIl A Challenge. Game Notes: Leading rushers for the Rebels were seniors Alex Stock, (13 carries for 99 yds,) and Brandon Petree, (21 carries for 86 yds.) Quarterback Brian Soller went 4 of 11 for 41 yards and 1 interception.

The last time Roncalli lost to FC was during the 2007 season at Roncalli Stadium, in an overtime loss 22-16. Since 1994 the Rebels have only lost their 1sttwo games three times prior to Friday’s contest, (2002, 2003, and 2007.) In ‘ 02 and ’03 Roncalli went on to win the state championship that year, while in 2007 they finished 3-7, with a first round sectional loss.

The Rebel football team travels to Franklin Central tonight to face off in a battle against the Flashes. After last week’s heart-breaker, the Rebels try to bounce back by getting the win tonight.

Brian Soller is ready after making his debut last week. Against Southport, he went 8-16 with over 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Also standing out last week was running back Brandon Petree. Petree led the team in rushing yards and scored two touchdowns. One of his touchdowns coming right before the end of the first half.

That said, if the Rebels plan to go into Franklin Central tonight and escape with a win, they have to come ready to play right from the start. Despite having a comeback at the end, digging a 21-0 hole did not help the Rebels chances at winning the game.

However, it’s a new week and a new game and the Rebels look to be ready for a great one.

After a one year hiatus, the Chick- fil-a challenge is back . Once again competing against Franklin Central, the Rebel community plans on beating the Flashes after a hard defeat two years ago.

Roncalli will be given 20 percent of every order purchased at the Chick -fil- A on Southport road, with an extra bonus for the winning team during the week of August 21-27.

Franklin Central won the total for the day on Saturday by a narrow $100 margin. As of Tuesday, the battle is at a dead heat with the totals too close to call. Since Tuesday is milkshake bonus day, everyone from Roncalli who purchases milkshakes helps RHS earn an extra $250. Students and staff members may present their student ID at the time of purchase, or present the Chick fil a flyer in order to make certain the purchase counts toward Roncalli.

Since the birth of the Roncalli-Southport Rivalry in 2008, the Rebels of Roncalli have dominated the Cardinals of Southport by 20 and 8 points respectively. This past Friday night however, the rivalry took a turn for the better, (or for the Rebels a worse,) in the closest game between them this decade.

At first glance, this matchup looked like another blowout, only this time in favor of Southport, as the Cardinals scored 21 first-half points. Despite struggles early, the Rebels bounced back, scoring twice in the final two minutes, to cut the Southport lead to one score at the half.

Entering the start of the second half, the Rebels put their momentum to good use, as senior Brandon Petree recorded his second touchdown of the contest early in the third quarter on an 11-yard rush to tie the score at 21 apiece.

Despite the 21 unanswered points by the Rebels, the Cardinals converted on a controversial third and nine early in the fourth quarter. Southport went on to score their first touchdown of the second half, putting the Cardinals back in front, 28-21 in the process.

Unfortunately for the Rebels, it was a lead that Southport would not relinquish. Roncalli had a game-tying drive in the making, and at one point it looked as though they did just that; on third down with under a minute to go, a loft pass from quarterback Brian Soller to Brandon Petree thought to be a touchdown was ruled out-of-bounds. On the ensuing possession, with 26 seconds left on the clock, the Rebels faced a fourth and nine, ball game on the line. On this occasion however, it was Southport’s defense that sealed the deal for the Cardinals, sacking Soller, and hanging on for a 28-21 victory. The victory was Southport’s first since the rivalry started in 2008, and the first season opening loss for Roncalli since the 2007 season.

Game notes: Senior Brandon Petree led the Rebels in scoring with two touchdowns, followed by Jordan Donica who had one receiving touchdown. The last time Roncalli lost a season opener was the 2007 season, they finished that year 3-7.
